Story behind the song
I co-wrote this song with Kevin Monroe, in Nashville, Tennessee. I met Kevin at a Christmas party, out at Craig Krampfs ranch ... if you read deeper into my bio stuff, then you know that I worked with Craig on a very significant project way back in 1972-73 - he also wound up moving to Nashville about 2-3 years after I did and we, naturally, hooked up again ... some 15+ years later! - what a trip, eh? Anyway, Craig encouraged Kevin and I to get together and do some co-writing. He thought it would be a great combination, and I'll be damned if he wasn't right. Note that I rarely find co-writing to be a very enjoyable experience, but I'm always into trying it, and with Kevin, I was really glad that I did! Kevin came over to my place ... we hung out for a while, and wound up writing most of the verses in our first session together. Kevin's very cool ... has some truly great material ... and at this time, was packing clubs in Nashville like "nobody's business." We connected immediately, and "Wishes" was not only easy to write, but it brought a very deep and meaningful experience to both of us, in the process. The title and basic idea for the song was Kevin's, as was the chord progression through the verses. He had a situation with one particular girlfriend that was robbing him of any peace, and we started by just rapping about that situation. Lyrically there's a strange 50/50 split: Kevin went, "If you don't see a reason to hope, you won't see a reason to dream ..." and I went, "That's right. And you don't hear the angels cry, everytime you don't believe ..." - and that's pretty much the way it went. We got together a couple of days later and finished up the verses, and then a couple of weeks passed before we finally added the bridge: "It's all up to you, I can't do anything ..." ... and finished the song. Kevin's version of the song, speaking in terms of performance, is a far cry from mine ... he does the song in a much faster tempo, with a rock & roll band ... and it's wonderful to hear such a different version ... by the "other" writer, too! I'm back home in Jersey and Kevin's still in Nashville ... but we keep in touch.
Lyrics
I could say a prayer But it wouldn't make any difference Yeah, 'cause I could tell the truth And you wouldn't believe I'm standin' here shinin' this light When you close your eyes You gotta make your second chance The music plays but you refuse to dance You gotta go where your wishes are If you don't see a reason to hope You won't find a reason to dream That's right You won't hear the angels cry Everytime you don't believe Sometimes you gotta walk alone Sometimes you gotta run through the flames Take it when it comes Leave it when it goes Don't stop chasin' rainbows Forget the broken promises Forget the tears you wore You know the way to go ... What are you waiting for? Go where your wishes are You gotta go where your wishes are Dig down, deep inside your heart And go where your wishes are Hey -- it's all up to you I can't do anything ... ooh, no You gotta choose the hope from the lie Crawl through the dark ... Or walk in the light ... Forget the broken promises Forget the tears you wore You know the way to go ... What are you waiting for? Go where your wishes are You gotta go where your wishes are Dig down, deep inside your heart And go where your wishes are Yeah, go where your wishes are © 1992 by Alan Horvath and Kevin Monroe
